Fake Instructions for Xbox One Backward Compatibility Cause Trouble

Some Xbox One users have followed instructions from an image that has recently been distributed through many websites for enabling backward compatibility to play Xbox 360 games. Unfortunately, the instructions in the image are actually fake.

The image originated from 4chan and is a prank that has caused grief to users of the Xbox One as the instructions result in a never-ending boot loop that makes the console unusable after a change within the Xbox One developer console.

One way to recover from the never-ending boot loop is to select “Restore Factory Defaults” in the settings menu, which also will erase all accounts, apps, games, saved games, and settings from the console.

It has been confirmed in a tweet by Larry Hryb from the Xbox One team that “there is no way to make your Xbox One backwards compatible & performing steps to attempt this could make your console inoperable,” so be careful with any instructions that promise Xbox One backward compatibility.
